Shift working and dieting

Not having a regular meal pattern is going to be hard when planning diet. You will feel hungry at all the wrong times and will be tempted to eat the food you want to stop eating!

The way to make your diet work is to plan ahead and be prepared. This will take more of your time but if done correctly you can really make this diet really work for you, by adapting it to make each mealtime delicious and fulfilling.

Given that you will need to make time to shop for food, you will also need to invest in good quality food storage containers, especially if you do not have any cool storage area at work and the food needs to be left in a bag or locker.

There are plenty of options for containers, but get a few that work for you. Some have multiple sections and layers - these are good but you must ensure that there are cooler blocks with them. I would also strongly recommend that if you need to pack up more than one meal and some snacks that you use several different containers. Not only will this keep the meals separate, but you also won’t be so tempted to eat into the next meal. You’ll also be able to keep each meal cool or hot depending on what food you decide to prepare.

Portion control is key, and if you are not eating at standard mealtimes then what you eat is very important. You want to look forward to the meal, but not want to overeat.

Make up (for example) a batch of rice salads with lean chicken and a couple of chopped dried apricots to curb that sweet craving. Here is my quick recipe for a batch of chicken rice salads:

  • A packet of Tilda plain rice

  • Tin of sweet corn and peas

  • Chopped up roasted chicken breast (skin removed)

  • Chopped up dried apricots or a few sultanas

  • A dessertspoon of mayo

  • Mix up and keep in the fridge or pack into chilled containers

My go-to snack option is one or two Jacob’s cracker and a smear of peanut butter. (See blog link). If you need to pack an additional meal, a thermos real food flask with hot baked beans mixed with a couple of Quorn cocktail sausages is truly delicious.

Planning ahead will take time, especially if you are calorie watching. You don’t want meals to leave you hungry, as you will fixate on eating. So, enjoy the planning and really think about eating good wholesome food.
